Resumen

La evolución de las capacidades tecnológicas equiparan un teléfono móvil de bajo coste a los grandes ordenadores de hace 20 o 30 años. Estas mejoras se incorporan en cada proceso industrial y la navegación es un proceso complejo y con alto riesgo, consecuentemente, está siendo objeto de investigación e implantación de tecnologías digitales desde hace bastantes años.

Este artículo va de esos buques, barcos o incluso barcazas que son capaces de realizar trabajos de manera autónoma.

Desde recoger basura y contaminación hasta ser usados como arma de guerra al estilo de los drones aéreos.

Como siempre es difícil definir cuándo se empieza a pensar en la automatización de los buques. Quizás el primer paso fue la incorporación del radar y posteriormente de las cartas digitales. Más cercano en el tiempo, en septiembre  de 2015 , Lloyd’s  Register of Shipping (LR), QinetiQ Group y la Universidad de Southampton publicaron conjuntamente el informe "Global Marine Technology Trends 2030” en el que el tema de los buques inteligentes  figura como una de las ocho tecnologías marinas clave en el futuro . A futuro la Organización Marítima Internacional está trabajando para establecer un marco legal en el que los buques no tripulados puedan coexistir con los tripulados.
